Synopsis
Canyon is a 45-minute video projection of a continuous travelling shot of a winding canyon wall in Glen Canyon, Arizona. Flooded by a dam in 1963, Glen Canyon was submerged under water before being recognized by environmentalists as a natural wonder. After a decade-long drought that brought the levels of Lake Powell to a record low, Glen Canyon is now emerging from the water. This change in water levels, like the man-made lake, is a product of human intervention in the landscape and stands as a testament to the growing instability of nature’s patterns.
Drawing close attention to the canyon wall’s surface Canyon documents the imprint of geologic time and the changes it carves into nature’s terrain. The audience is invited to engage in a viewing experience that impels the eye to move with the camera, while simultaneously allowing it to explore the surface of the image. Demanding sustained attention, the film aims to immerse the viewer into a sensory experience that reconsiders our perception of the natural world.
The accompanying musical piece by pioneering experimental composer David Behrman composed through a real-time interaction between human performers and a computer, creates a symphony of organic and synthetic sounds. (used with the permission of the artist)
